For your first discussion this term, I would like you to read the essays listed for Week Four in the Schedule Button.
As you read the essays, practice Bunn's technique of "reading like a writer" and read for those elements that you selected to work on in your own work. You may pay particular attention to how the authors address the issues of time (narrative pacing) and space (detail and closeness to subject) in the essays. Consider those elements that the author chose to put in and what s/he chose to leave out (obviously, we don't KNOW everything that was left out, but think about what you don't see in the essays and how that lack impacts you as a reader). The focus here is on HOW the reader manipulates elements you are working on in your own writing for effect in their writing.
Identify passages where you see the elements that you have chosen to work on in your own writing in the writing for this week. Try to select at least one element from each reading that illustrates/demonstrates the concepts you are choosing to work on. Pay close attention to the TECHNIQUES of the writing instead of the SUBJECTS of the essays (e.g., discuss how the essays are written, not the subject of the Virginia Tech shooting or spending time at a quiet lake).
Post your original post by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, February 8. You will not be able to see your classmates' posts before you post, nor will you be able to edit your original post once it is posted. So please compose your initial post carefully.
