For your first assignment, I would like you to construct an essay or memoir on a topic of your choosing. The final essay should be 6-8 pages.
In this essay, you should demonstrate attention to time and space, in particular the narrative speed at which you tell the story (slowing or speeding the narration for effect) and the distance at which you hold your audience (drawing the audience in through detail or keeping them at arms-length for effect). We will practice both of these techniques during the first four weeks of the course.
The essay should be submitted via Google Docs and shared with Dr. Harris. The title of the document should be the title of the essay. Include your name and the title at the top of the essay as well. Failure to submit the essay with a title and with the name and title on the essay will result in a zero for the score on the draft.
Deadlines:
The first draft is due to Dr. Harris by Sunday, February 8.
The essay should be revised for workshopping by Sunday, February 22.
The final essay will be due Sunday, March 8.
